Cherry Orchard Primary School

Cherry Orchard have been friends of ABC since the charity began in 2019. Previously we have refurbished an out-building to create a playground library, but this time our challenge was much greater.

The senior leadership team wanted to put reading into the heart of the school. To have books on display and have somewhere exciting the children could visit to read.

With the help of Dave Blacker of Olivbells, ABC was able to transform part of the lobby into a secluded reading den, complete with a reading tower and filled with over 1,000 books donated by local families to the charity.

Financial donations from charity partners meant we were also able to purchase a selection of brand new inclusive books for the library so that every child is able to see their lives, circumstances and heritage reflected in the books on offer.

The new Reading Woods is full of cosy cushions, soft rugs, fairy lights, nooks and crannies to read in and blankets to snuggle up in with a book.

Councillor Lakshan Saldin for Charlton Hornfair Ward cut the ribbon to launch the library to the delighted children and invited guests including parents, governors, teachers, sponsors, a local author and a member of the school improvement team from Greenwich council.

Sey Hussan, the headteacher at Cherry Orchard said "We are delighted with our new space and we know the impact this is going to make in our school will be huge."
